Meet Ken Blackburn
Ken Blackburn has a gift. While some people are gifted singers or speakers or painters, Ken’s gift is somewhat harder to define. Though it’s true that he’s a gifted woodworker, the real nature of his gift goes well beyond his skill as a craftsman. Rather it resides within his relationship to the furnishings that comfort us and enhance our lives. Ken knows these pieces intimately. His gift is in helping them become all that they wish to be. Like a fountain of youth for the glorious antiques of yesteryear, Ken is able to give new life to pieces long past their prime. His restoration skills revive pieces almost magically, allowing them to once more earn the respect and admiration they deserve. And like many gifted artists, Ken has built a rich and colorful life in pursuit of his talent.
Born in London in 19xx it wasn’t long before Ken developed an interest in woodworking. He took that interest to work first in the piano trade, and later even the army found he was best suited to working in the base woodshop. After leaving the military, Ken took a position with the renowned P. Walters Antique Restorers firm. There Ken’s passion for restoration and refinishing flourished. His skills blossomed and rose to a position of fame and prominence within the company.
Seeking more, in 1974 Ken left England and a large clientele for the United States, where he took a job with a well-known furniture company. But he could not surrender his passion for restoration, and finding and restoring discarded treasures in his spare time. His partner Alan Gleason had other ideas, though. Alan recognized Ken’s talent instantly, and was able to eventually convince him to start a business of his own. In 1986, the two opened up a small shop in West Palm Beach, Florida, and quickly began servicing antique dealers and designers in Palm Beach as well as West Palm Beach’s world famous “Antique Row.” It was not long before Ken’s reputation and fame grew. So did the business. With many dealers sending their packages from Europe directly to the shop for preparation, Ken Blackburn, Inc. soon had to take on employees.
Training a new generation of furniture restorationists, Ken and Alan continued to innovate; developing educational programs and specialized “in home” services that helped the business blossom. At the height of their restoration business, with a cadre of famous clients and complete respect of the international antique market on Antique Row, Alan and Ken expanded their business to include retail, opening Argosy Antiques on Antique Row. At last, they were able to offer a complete package, from restoration to retail and the pair established themselves as a cornerstone of the local industry.
After several years in Florida, Ken and Alan realized that something was still missing. A market shift from Antiques to reproductions helped the two to realize that what was really needed to honor the antiques Ken restored and adored was relevance. After all, even though the most lovingly restored piece would receive little love if it could not fit into the home environment. And while reproductions were becoming widely available, quality was clearly a problem. So Ken and Alan devised a plan to open a new business in North Carolina, an area with deep tradition and respect for antiquity. They would provide restorative service, as before, and continue to sell their beloved antiques, but they would also offer accessories and quality reproductions that passed the scrutiny of Ken’s Masterful eye.
Thus Ken Blackburn’s Rustic Rooster was born, offering at long last, the fullest expression of a master’s gift. After time Ken, Alan, and their newest partner Michael Alsina realized that although the Asian furniture market was producing a great look in their reproduction furniture it was lacking the quality that they and their clients were demanding. So during a time when the country was in recession, they made a bold decision. No longer will they buy furniture manufactured in any Asian country.
“Even though most of our furniture companies have shifted their operations to the far east, we still have a great deal of talented manufacturers left here in North Carolina and the good old USA.”
“Not only do we want to preserve quality, but we all as Americans MUST put our people back to work. American made is tomorrows antiques Asian made is tomorrows garbage.”
The Rustic Rooster is operated by three friends; Ken, Alan, and Michael. The Rustic Rooster in meeting market demands has begun stocking a fine line of men’s shirts, sweaters, and other fine menswear that compliments their location with The Dande Lion and Shooz and Shiraz as neighbors in the Tynecastle Shopping Center located in Banner Elk, North Carolina.
